The Story Behind the Name

Mary Emma Bailey Elementary

  • Original Cost: $7,908,019
  • Opened: 1996

Mary Emma Bailey, a lifelong Dublin resident, historian and schoolteacher, saw Dublin transform from a quiet farming community to a thriving suburb. She had many memories of an “old-fashioned” Dublin: a village without traffic, modern architecture, or housing projects. Bailey would talk fondly of growing crops and feeding the hogs on their farmland on the corner of Route 161 and Riverside Drive. When asked her opinion on the changes in Dublin, Bailey replied, “some of it’s good and some of it’s not so good. One good thing is that they’ll be able to offer a broader education and more subjects. One thing that isn’t good is that some of the students don’t have a chance to take part in as many activities. . .” Perhaps the most profound statement made by Bailey was when it was revealed to her that the 10th elementary school in Dublin was to be named in her honor. She said, “You can’t do that - it has to be named after someone who’s dead!” A former student of Bailey reflects, “there never was a person who loved Dublin kids or worked harder for Dublin schools than Mary Emma Bailey. Today I recognize Mary Emma Bailey as one of the ‘grand ladies of Dublin’.”

District enrollment when the building opened was 10,321.

The building is 66,018 square feet in size.
